Theory Master Class – Spring 2024
The spring 2024 theory master class entitled Why Le Corbusier?, led by Tim Benton—writer, broadcaster, and Professor Emeritus in the History of Art at the Open University—took place from Monday, April 15 to Friday, April 26. The master class explored and interrogated Le Corbusier’s texts, lectures, buildings, paintings, and decorative works. Participants were invited to use their imagination to build creative responses that confronted selected topics, problems, and controversies. The two-week-long program was complemented by lectures and discussions with international guests, and concluded with a public event and exhibition in the Orange Room on Friday, April 26.

Diversity and Invention: Le Corbusier After the War
Friday, April 26, 10:00-17:00

This symposium explored Le Corbusier's concept of espace indicible, translated as "ineffable space," which he used repeatedly after the Second World War to explain how a work of art transcends ordinary reality (building). A number of ideas underpinned this concept, from his renewed interest in the synthesis of the arts (and his attempt to establish himself as a painter) to ideas about the "divine" status of mathematics and proportion. Guest lecturers examined the tracés régulateurs, the Modulor, and selected postwar buildings. Speakers included Tim Benton, Alejandro Lapunzina, Caroline Maniaque, Mary McLeod, and Stanislaus von Moos.
